Nursery Road State Special School is a co-educational state school facility providing excellence in education in a friendly and supportive environment. Our school was opened as Mt Gravatt west special school on 28 July, 1986, to provide educational programs to students with disabilities, particularly students with multiple impairments. Nursery Road State Special is the new name selected by the school community through a community consultation process conducted in 2009.

Our school supports school-age students with high support needs, and very young children with developmental challenges. The student population is drawn from across the south side of Brisbane and maintains a consistent sized school population.

From 2010 the school has extended its program offerings to include the Xavier conductive education program; a program based on the principles of conductive education and situated in purpose built classrooms on the school campus.

Nursery Road State Special School provides educational programs for students between 5 and 18 years who may have significant delays or impairments in the area of physical, sensory and/or intellectual functioning. In addition a number of our students are diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder. Our specialisation in educational provision is to provide programs for children and young people with multiple disabilities or with a singe impairment diagnosis coupled with complex and challenging behaviour/health support needs.

Our campus comprises Xavier conductive education program, the early childhood developmental unit and the main school which is structured around our junior middle and senior school phases of learning.

  • The early childhood developmental unit caters for children from birth to 6 years with a disability or suspected disability. An integral part of the early childhood development unit is the shared prep programs and the prep outreach program.
  • Xavier conductive education program offers early intervention program for children prior to prep, a toddlers and babies program, and a special education program based on the principles of conductive education for children of school age from prep to 18 years.
  • Whilst experiencing a unique program within the campus, school aged children in the Xavier conductive education program are an integral part of Nursery Road State Special School and combine in curriculum aspects and whole school events over the course of the school year with their counterpart aged peers around the junior, middle and senior phases of learning upon which the school is structured.
